For over 30 years China & Porcelain Repair & Restoration of Florida have been the leaders in every form of repair, restoration and conservation of china, porcelain, ceramic, plaster, glass, steel, bronze, and wood collectibles and fine art. Whether its a small chip or completely destroyed, China & Porcelain Repair & Restoration of Florida has the experience and expertise to restore damaged items to 100% perfection even recreating pieces that may have been lost or misplaced over time.
As a third generation artist and restorer, Jason’s talent is a combination of his rare gift for recreating, rebuilding, sculpting, restoring and color matching coupled with over 30 years of research and restoration experience. As a sculptor, painter and restorer, He states that his talent is a unique inherent gift coupled with years of ongoing training, experience and restoration science. In addition to countless years of training, research, and restoration on thousands of items, Jason has also developed his own fillers, enamels and glazes that bond to and imitate porcelain and china yet never crackle or yellow over time like conventional oil-based restorations do.
Unlike traditional restorers who mask over damages by spraying petroleum-based enamels over a damaged item (which cracks and yellows over time), our restorer has developed an exclusive hybrid polymer that never yellows, shrinks or cracks but remains unaltered for the life of the restoration. In addition to this, the polymer is brushed on in layers of semi-transparent color that the artist chooses using a technique similar to that of Baroque painters which actually creates the depth and translucency of actual porcelain which cannot be imitated with traditional air-brush kits used by conventional restorers.
THE ROOTS OF AN ARTIST & RESTORER
Jason came from a family of artists, artisans, and musicians of British and French descent. His earliest known ancestor was a British Whitesmith and sculptor who created decorative and ornamental metalwork during the Revolutionary War period. This rare talent to fabricate and refine objects of beauty from raw materials was passed down for generations to be inherited by Jason's father and in turn Jason himself. His grandmother, who was from Reims, France was also very passionate about the arts often speaking of her country's rich heritage and inspiring and encouraging Jason at an early age to pursue the fine arts. Jason's grandfather met his future wife in 1944 during the Liberation of France from Nazi Germany. His grandmother told the story of being forced to peel potatoes for the Nazi soldiers who at one point took her out to be executed for stealing potato peels for her starving family only to find out it was a mock execution and prank designed to teach her a lesson. In France the two were married and had a son but would eventually create a life and large family together in the United States. Jason's mother is also a gifted artist, musician and writer herself who also comes from a family of talented artists and musicians. These artistic attributes and inspirations from both sides of his family were the foundation that Jason would build his career as a restorer and artist upon.
It all started at a very young age, when not watching his favorite cartoons or movies, that Jason would be recreating his beloved super hero's and movie characters through the mediums of clay, marker and paint. As he grew older, he would also work extensively in clays, oils and acrylics to become a gifted sculptor and painter during his middle and high school years. Around the same time he was also active as a restorer at the family shop where he used his talents to hand carve elaborate woodwork and gilding that was damaged or missing from ornamental plaster, furniture, picture frames, and sculptures. His father, who was a restorer as well, realized his talent early on and continued to encourage Jason in his work as an artist, fabricator and restorer.
ACCOLADES IN ART
During his middle and high school years Jason took numerous intermediate and advanced classes in sculpting, ceramics, drawing, painting and art history. At this time he developed a higher understanding and appreciation of the history of art as well as a deeper understanding of the nature and composition of various clays, glazes and paints and how to master them to attain a desired goal. It was during this time that he also won various accolades and awards in art, ceramics and sculpting. As a young teenager, Jason also had a passion for special effects design, robotics and latex prosthetic design which were inspired by the various science fiction and scary films he enjoyed growing up. Every fall season he would create his own full-bodied costumes around Halloween that he used to win cash and bar tabs in costume contests at local clubs, bars and restaurants.
EARLY CAREER AS A PROFESSIONAL RESTORER
In his early 20's Jason continued to rebuild and restore more complex items in the mediums of plaster and ceramic such as pottery, decorative table bases, statuary and, vases and soon started his first company that provided restoration and artistic services to local interior designers, galleries, moving companies and, residential clients. Around this time Jason was introduced to local restorer Julie Raguth owner of Jura Studios in Sarasota, Florida who after hearing of his work, decided to subcontract Jason as a full time restorer.
His first restoration challenge was a large shattered flow blue platter which Julie specifically gave him to test his skill. Within a few weeks Jason returned to Jura Studios with the completely rebuilt and restored plate. The restoration was flawless! "You are a gifted master!" she proclaimed! From that point Jason worked for Julie doing the most complicated restorations and within a few years time began to concentrate his energies solely on his own growing list of clientele. In addition to this, Jason developed into a prolific painter doing countless commissions for local designers and residential collectors as well as selling his paintings through various venues.
FEATURED IN ARCHITECTUAL DIGEST
In 2001, Jason was contacted by a client of his, local gallery owner Bill Hartman. Renown Interior Designer Sally Sirkin Lewis was in town doing a multi-million dollar installation for client Joseph Esformes and was in need of restoration and artistic services. Bill highly recommended Jason to Sally's assistant Kenn Shlaes who scheduled with Jason to come to the condominium. At the residence, Jason flawlessly restored damages on hand made wall paper, wood paneling and furniture. He also faux finished white plastic switch plates to make them look identical to the wood paneling and installed fine art. In addition to this, he restored a pair of Cambodian fertility dolls that were damaged in transit from California. After the completion of his work Jason was thanked and complimented by Sally for his "outstanding artistic workmanship". An article detailing the installation was published in Architectual Digest. http://www.architecturaldigest.com/gallery/lewis-slideshow-022002/all
